Manual Therapy

What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is treatment administered by physical therapists & physical therapists assistants (PTA) in which they use their hands (as well as tools) to soft tissues and joints.  At HealthQuest Physical Therapy, we put a high value on manual therapy, and as a patient, you will receive it every visit!  There are many kinds of manual, but the ones we use the most are outlined below.

What types of manual therapy does HealthQuest use?

#1 Mobilization

Passive movement of joints, using various grades, speeds, and pressure amplitudes. Primarily used to increase motion.

#2 Traction

A form of decompression that relieves pressure. It can be performed manually or mechanically.   Primarily used for pain relief.

#3 Resistance & Stretching.

Primarily used for improving strength and flexibility.

#4 Soft Tissue

Specific connective tissue massage using the therapist’s hands helps restore normal mobility and prevents adherence of newly formed scar tissue within the soft tissue structures of ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

#5 Trigger Point Release

Mostly consists of rubbing and pressing on trigger points or muscle “knots”.  Dry needling is a popular form of this.

#6 Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization or IASTM uses specific tools that help break adhesions and scarring brought on by surgeries, injuries, and overuse of muscles. We use a variety of different brands. Read more here.
