Biography:
My experience in the medical field is both as a patient and as a clinician. After graduating from high school I was drafted by the New York Yankees as a pitcher. I played for the Yankees from 1987 to 1994 and for the Detroit Tigers in 1995. During my career I sustained injuries to my shoulder and elbow. I had surgery on both and was sent to physical therapy at some of the premier sports rehabilitation centers in the country. My playing career ended as a result of injury and unfortunately inadequate physical therapy. I decided to become a therapist for exactly this reason. I did not want to see any athlete not reach their dreams because of injury. Since 1996, I have dedicated my life to understanding sports injuries and how to properly and completely rehabilitate an athlete back to the field.
In 2000 I was diagnosed with cancer, specifically Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I went through chemotherapy for 9 months in 2000 and spent many hours in the rehabilitation center trying to gain my strength back. The cancer went into remission but came back in 2003. I went through a bone marrow transplant in 2003 at M.D. Anderson and have been cancer free ever since.
This last year has been eventful to say the least. I was put in the I.C.U at U of M hospital with pneumonia that ended up in septic shock. I have had multiple amputations losing my left lower leg and some fingertips. I have had my gall bladder removed and am still waiting to go through a kidney transplant. During this, I have gained a tremendous level of respect for my patients as well as the physical therapists specializing in these areas. I only hope that my experiences in life can improve me as a clinician as I continue on my career path.
